The Panthers’ newly signed safety was seen taking a knee during the national anthem before the start of Carolina’s home game against the New York Giants.
Reid was the only player on either team to take a knee, a statement he began making with Colin Kaepernick in 2016. After Reid entered free agency last season, he remained unsigned throughout the offseason and through the first four games of 2018.
The Panthers stated they signed him due to a need on defense, a move largely supported by new owner David Tepper.
Previously, Reid filed a collusion case against the NFL, stating team owners conspired not to sign him due to his decision to protest racial inequality and social injustice during the national anthem.
Kaepernick also filed a collusion case, which will go to trial.
