Tomas had been rumored to be seeking a deal that reached the $100 million mark, but according to Sanchez’s report, he didn’t come close to reaching that number. Jose Abreu, the Cuban slugger who hit 36 home runs and won the 2014 AL Rookie of the Year award, signed with the White Sox in October 2013 for a nearly identical six-year, $68 million deal.
From Sanchez’s story:
The Diamondbacks brought in Tony La Russa to run their baseball operations this spring, and this is yet another big move in his quest to rebuild a team that finished with the worst record in baseball in 2014.
UPDATE: Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart told the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro that the deal is not done and could still collapse.
“We’ve talked to his people,” Stewart said Wednesday night via text message. “We understand the parameters in which they all work under. We’re sitting here internally trying to figure out what we want to do and if we can be a part of the negotiation.”
Stewart said the framework of an offer is in place.“They understand what our position is and what areas we’re willing to go,” Stewart told Piecoro.
