Teryl Austin, Baltimore's secondary coach, is expected to be named Detroit's new defensive coordinator, DetroitNews.com's Chris McCosky reports.

The Lions had one of the league's top offenses, but fielded a middle-of-the-road caliber defense last season.

It's difficult to predict whether Austin's impact as a former secondary coach will be positive or negative as a DC in Detroit. Austin's Ravens racked up 16 interceptions last year — one more than the Lions.

The decision seems to be a product of Caldwell's personal preference. As ProFootballTalk reports, he and Austin worked together at Penn State and Wake Forest before the Ravens.
